Durable outer layer

DNS Alpha uses mechanically textured polyamide 6.6 for the outer layer of the Light Insulation Jacket, which offers increased durability and comfortable stretch.

Water repellent insulation

The insulation, made of durable water-repellent polyester, is extremely lightweight despite its excellent thermal performance. Breathable, windproof polyamide is used for the lining.

Feature for dynamic use

Due to the smart stretch construction back panel, the Light Insulation Hoody offers unparalleled freedom of movement. The wrists have a light and comfortable Lycra to increase abrasion resistance. The optimally placed handwarmer pockets offer additional comfort through additional insulation of the pockets. The hood can be adjusted in size with a drawstring and thus adapted to the individual head shape of the user.

Temperature management

The DNS Alpha Light Insulation Jacket was developed for temperatures around 50F and its performance can be optimised depending on the choice of baselayer. Pairing with DNS Alpha Merino Wool base layers is recommended for optimal warmth.

Polyamide 6,6 (Nylon 6,6) versus Polyester:

  • Cycles to Failure (Martindale Test): Nylon 6,6 typically withstands 35,000–40,000+ cycles before noticeable wear, whereas polyester usually lasts for 20,000–30,000 cycles.
  • Performance Comparison: In high-intensity testing, Nylon 6,6 has been shown to withstand about 40,000 rubs, while similar polyester lasted through 20,000, indicating double the durability in some scenarios.
  • Tensile Strength: Nylon 6,6 also boasts higher tensile strength (800–1200 MPa) compared to polyester (500–800 MPa), allowing it to better resist breaking under high-stress, high-friction scenarios.
Why Polyamide 6.6 is More Resistant
Nylon 6,6 superior wear resistance is due to its strong amide linkages and higher molecular toughness. This makes it superior for applications requiring extreme durability, such as military gear, climbing ropes, high-traffic carpet, and heavy-duty backpacks.
